By Harriers standards it could be said that last week was quite unusual. Normally the Harriers are spread across various events, for example running in the Cross Country Championships, Road or Fell Races, or Park Runs.
But on Sunday 5th February 2023, the planets aligned and 23 Harriers made the journey over the Pennines, to run in the the Dewsbury 10K. This was the first race in the 2023 Harriers Road Race Championships. Starting at 9.00am, it was a sunny but freezing morning with no wind.
The race started on the Dewsbury Ring Road, went gently uphill, along Bradford Rd, then through Batley. After 5K distance, the runners turned around to enjoy the luxury of running slightly downhill back to the finish.
Of the 23 Harriers who took part, two were running their first ever 10K: Izzie Brandon, 12th Harrier home in a time of 45m, 20secs and Molly Howell, 19th Harrier in a time of 48m, 40secs.
Four Harriers finished in the top 8 of their age category, namely Kay Welsby, Jennie Ransome, Danny Bennett and Ian Aitchison.
An amazing 10 Harriers achieved PB’s (Personal Bests) for the 10K distance. they were Jeff McCarthy, Andrew Martin, Sean Lindsay, Jonathan Lupton (1st ever sub 40m for the 10K), Bryony Sherry, Janice Whitelegge, Dan Merlo, Kevin Holland, Julie Smith and Stephanie Harrison.
The remaining 10 fixtures in our Road Race Championship 2023 and this year’s league table are on our fixtures page. Only 5 of the qualifying 11 races run as a member of RHAC are required to complete the Championship.
