RHAC Junior Section
Juniors’ training sessions are held at the Kingsway Sports Arena on Thursday evenings at 7-8 pm. All abilities are welcome. £2 per session. The coaching team includes five EA-qualified members, namely by Nick Barton (Athletics Coach), Bryony Sherry (LiRF), Lisa Fern (CA), Lee Meadowcroft (CA) and Isabel Mitchell (CA).
Currently our Junior Section comprises over 30 youngsters. They train in all aspects of athletics, including:
– running (sprints, middle distance, long distance, relay);
– jumping;
– throwing; and
– indoor Sportshall (9 years old and upwards).
Due to the popularity of the Junior training sessions, currently we are not accepting any new Junior members under the age of 14. However if you agree to assist regularly with training at Junior sessions and pass DBS checks, we might be able to offer your junior a place (subject to availability). After an introductory period we can provide you with training on how to lead young athletes, e.g. through the Leading in Athletics course (a 3 hour online course run by UK Athletics, min age 14). If, in future, we can get enough Leaders/Coaches in our Junior section we would like to add Tuesday training sessions. In fact, some of the more capable older juniors (age 14-17) train alongside Seniors on Tuesday nights on a shortened session.
For child protection reasons, any non-members attending Juniors’ training sessions at Kingsway (e.g. parents, grandparents, guardians, carers etc.) will need to bring satisfactory identification (e.g. picture ID such as a passport or driving licence and a utility bill showing your address).
The first three sessions are free, following which the cost is £2 per session. After the three sessions, your child will need to join the Club as a Member (see annual Membership Fees) and will be expected to participate in competitions and events as advised by the coaching team. We encourage our Junior athletes to take part in cross-country events (e.g. the South East Lancashire cross-country League, four Saturdays per year during winter) and indoor Sportshall events.
One of the benefits of membership is a discount for several retailers who sell sports clothing, shoes and equipment and discounts for many competitive events.
If you are interested in Junior training please contact Nick Barton (Contact us). Before attending your first training session, please complete our on-line PAR-Q Form on behalf of the junior so that we can check for any major health issues we need to know about.
